Provider
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
About Credential
The Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A is a federally regulated credential required to operate tractor-trailers and combination vehicles in interstate commerce. It validates a driver’s ability to safely operate heavy commercial vehicles in compliance with DOT safety and operational standards.
Prepares You For These Roles
- Commercial Truck Driver
- Fleet Driver
- Owner-Operator
- Linehaul Driver
Why Pursue This Credential
CDL Class A certification remains in high demand due to persistent driver shortages and continued freight growth. High-income opportunities are most common for owner-operators, linehaul drivers, and drivers hauling specialized or hazardous freight, where earnings often exceed standard local driving roles.
Credential Path
CDL Class A licensure is governed at the federal level by FMCSA but is issued by individual state DMV agencies, meaning testing procedures, fees, and scheduling vary by state. Applicants must meet federal age and medical requirements, pass knowledge and road exams, and obtain required endorsements such as Air Brakes. While CDL training schools are not federally mandated, completion of a state-approved CDL training program is strongly recommended and often required by employers.
